The new Polo family is complete, for now at least. Just as the first five-door models are delivered to customers, the sportier-looking three-door version has become available to order. The cheapest new Polo is now the three-door 1.2 59bhp S at £9435, while the most expensive is the 1.6 TDI 89bhp SEL at £14,310.

The same trim levels and engine options as the family-frendly five-door are available. Moving up from the base-level S, buyers can choose from Moda, SE and SEL, with air-conditioning-equipped S A/C and Moda A/C cars in-between. Engine choice is wide, with 59 and 69bhp 1.2 and 84bhp 1.4 petrols, and 74 and 89bhp diesel units.

Fresh from the UK press launch in the week, UK motoring weekly Autocar has published an online first drive of one of our favourite new Polo models, the 1.4 DSG. Tested in top SEL form, the magazine was impressed by the technology of the seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox and the mature, quality feel of the latest version of Volkswagen’s premium supermini. ‘Deeply impressive.’ Those are the first two words I jotted down in my notepad this morning at the UK press launch of the new Polo range. Come back in a few days’ time to find out what else we thought about the latest generation of Volkswagen’s premium supermini, from the 1.2 Moda to the range-topping 1.4 SEL.

Fresh from its motor show debut last week as a production model, here’s some footage of the new Polo BlueMotion. Of course, so far we’ve only seen the new eco-Polo as a concept, but that was back in March. The production model goes straight from concept to reality with few, if any, changes. The biggest difference that Polo BlueMotion Version 2.0 has over its predecessor, is that is available in three-door form.

The sip-sip Polo has a new engine, too. A new 1.2-litre 74bhp TDI powers the 2010 Polo BlueMotion, giving it Toyota Prius-beating emissions of 87g/km. It sips even slower, too, with a theoretical 85mpg available with a light right foot. Revised gear ratios, a Stop-Start system and regenerative braking also all add to the cause. Volkswagen is chasing an early 2010 on sale date, after the rest of the models in the new Polo range have been rolled out.
